US ANTI-DUMPINGMEASURES ON SHRIMPS The anti-dumping investigation on shrimps was initiated on December 31st 2003, when American shrimpers, under the umbrella of the Southern Shrimp Alliance, filed a petition calling for strict tariffs, against the dumping of shrimp fromChina, India, Thailand,Vietnam, Brazil and Ecuador. The alliance claimed that cheap imports fromthese countries had ruined the US industry, left thousands of people jobless and prompted a plunge in the value of the US harvested shrimp from $1.25 billion in 2000 to $559 million in 2002... ANTI-DUMPINGPOLICIES OF AMERICA – IRRATIONAL PROTECTIONISM? The imposition of preliminary anti-dumping duty on shrimp, had once again drawnworld’s attention on the anti-dumping practices of America. The preliminary probe into shrimp imports to the US conducted by US federal authorities, indicated that such imports were sold below the market prices. The US shrimp industry considered the measure as a serious threat to the domestic industry and compelled the government to impose tariffs on such imports... THE FUTURE The tariffs imposed by the US drew bitter reaction from the affected countries. China and Vietnam, once considered as fierce competitors in the global shrimp trade, decided to protest together against the irrational protectionism policies of the US. According to Nguyen Van Kich ofVASEP, the association had appointed a US lawfirm,Willkie Farr&Gallagher, to file an appeal. SEAI secretary-general, T. Raghunatha Reddy, said that the association would continue to defend the Indian shrimp industry and would fight the case, till the final verdict was delivered... |
